Martin Hackleman

National Symphony Orchestra Principal Horn since 2000, Martin Hackleman began playing when he was 16. During his studies at the University of Houston, in 1972, at the age of 19, he won the principal horn chair in the Calgary Philharmonic. Other teachers have included Barry Tuckwell and Roland Berger (Vienna Philharmonic). Mr. Hackleman was Principal Horn of the Vancouver Symphony, from 1974-1983 and 1990 - 1999. In 1983 he left Vancouver to join the Canadian Brass. His three years with the group saw many tours, recordings, and music video's. 
Mr. Hackleman was a member of the Empire Brass Quintet for four years.
He has published two etude books and is a frequent juror for the Canada Council. He is presently on the faculty at George Mason University and has been on the faculty at the University of Maryland, Boston University, and the University of British Columbia. He is also on faculty every summer at Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. 
From 1990 to 1995 Mr. Hackleman was the Music Director of “Curio”, a chamber music series on the CBC Radio.
In 1990 Martin Hackleman returned to the Vancouver Symphony as Principal Horn and Professor of Horn at the University of British Columbia. In 1999 Mr. Hackleman played Principal in the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit. He has also was guest principal with the Philadelphia Orchestra twice. Mr. Hackleman also plays solo horn in Washington Symphonic Brass and has recorded four CD’s with them.

Mr. Hackleman has made numerous recordings with the Vancouver Symphony, Montreal Symphony, the Canadian Brass, the Tidewater Brass, and the Empire Brass. In 1996 he recorded two solo CD's: one of his own arrangements for solo horn with piano and string accompaniment, and one of five Romantic concertos with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra. In addition, a recording of chamber music for two horns and bassoon was released in 1996. 1998 saw the release of a Christmas recording with horn quartet. A disc of the Brahms Horn Trio, including other chamber music, came out in 2000, and three new CD’s will be released in the near future.
